The prospective clients should know the difference between Residence permit and Permanent Residency often called “PR” or “Green card” and Citizenship.

“Naturalization” means one needs to live, being a resident for certain number of years, in an alien country before applying for citizenship. For example, one needs to live 12 years in Switzerland, before applying for Swiss citizenship. The residence permit is the first step towards naturalization.

Residence Permit (RP) Permanent Residency (PR)
The “Residence Permit”(RP) also known “Temporary Residence Permit” (TRP), gives a “temporary” residency in an alien country. It is usually renewed once in a year. The Permanent Residence Permit (PR) grants a long term permanent residency in an alien country, grants full rights to its owner at par with the locals except voting. It is renewed every 5 years.
Does not impose no minimum of days to stay in the alien country. In most countries, you are required to spend at-least few months yearly to satisfy the PR requirements. It varies county to country.
You can enter and exit the country anytime (multiple entries) You can enter and exit the country anytime
Puts you in path to receive “Permanent Residency (PR)” or even a Citizenship. Some countries allow to apply for citizenship after few years of residence, bypassing PR requirement. Puts you in excellent path to apply for citizenship in few years. Some countries allow to apply for Citizenship, only with the PR status.

Let us see a brief summary of investment programs available in different countries.

Australian Investor Visa:

To qualify for the investment visa, applicants must

  • Make an AUD $1.5 million investment in an Australian company in which they have an ownership stake
  • The investors must be less than 45 years old
  • Have net assets of AUD $2.25 million
  • Have a vocational level of English language proficiency
  • Have at least three years of business management experience
  • Have a positive business record.

Canadian Immigrant Investor Program:

In order to qualify for the program, investors must

  • Have a minimum net worth of CAD $1.6 million
  • Have two years of managerial experience
  • Make a CAD $800,000 investment for five years. This investment is managed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and used to facilitate economic growth in Canadian provinces. The full investment amount is returned to the investor without interest after about five years and three months after payment.

There is currently a 700 applicant cap on the Federal Immigrant Investor Program. There is an extensive backlog of Federal Immigrant Investor Program applications which has resulted in an approximately 12 to 15 years wait for new applicants/Investors.

French Residence Permit Program:

Investors can reside in France for 10 years via the French Residence Permit Program. There are no requirements regarding prior residency, residency in France, profession, or language skills. However, investors must be free of any criminal convictions and be in good standing in regard to residency rights on French territory.Investors must make a long-term and non-speculative investment of at least € 10 million in industrial or commercial assets in France. The investment can be personal or through a company in which the investor owns at least 30 percent of the capital.

Germany’s Investor Visa Program:

Applicants must have the financial means and capability to invest € 1 million into a German project, creating 10 new German job opportunities. The same investment requirement applies for self-employed entrepreneurs as a result of their entrepreneurial business plan.

Applicants must

  • Have a valid passport, relevant birth and marriage certificates, and relevant documents detailing their intent to reside in Germany
  • Have a medical and health insurance policy that must cover them to a value of at least € 30,000
  • Provide documentation demonstrating that they have sufficient means to support themselves and their families while residing in Germany

After holding a residency permit for a minimum of five years and having sufficient knowledge of the German language and social and legal systems, applicants may apply for permanent resident status.

New Zealand Investor and Investor Plus Visas:

Immigrant investors can obtain their New Zealand permanent residency through the Investor and Investor Plus visa categories. In order to qualify for the visa, applicants must

  • Be 65 years of age or younger
  • Be able to demonstrate at least three years of business experience
  • Meet English language requirements
  • Make a NZ $1.5 million investment to the New Zealand government for a period of five years
  • Be able to demonstrate that they intend, and have the ability, to settle in New Zealand
  • Foreign investors may also apply for New Zealand’s Investor Plus visa. Investor Plus applicants must make a NZ $10 million investment over a three year investment period. There are no language, age, or experience requirements for Investor Plus visa applicants.

    UK investor Visa:

    Under this program, foreign nationals who are interested to immigrate to UK are required to make a high net worth investment, not less than million pounds.

    Austria

    Austria is often seen as ‘swiss alternative’ destination as the costs aren't that expensive compared to Switzerland. You directly qualify for Austrian passport by making direct non-refundable charity donation of EUR 4-5 million euros.There are other options for the big investors.

    Switzerland

    Switzerland is the most attractive destination for wealthy clients who wish to relocate or retire in Europe. Switzerland has a “lump sum” taxation program of a minimum of CHF 150’000 you will given a choice of swiss canton and location to live and granted a Swiss residence permit. No employment is allowed. This program is available for retirees, business entrepreneurs and self-employed persons.

    Belgium

    Belgium is a major international financial center in Europe. To obtain residence in Belgium, you will need to form a new company with office/employees or join an already existing Belgium firm. The minimum investment usually needed about EUR 400’000 along with few additional costs. Belgium is the only country in Europe, where it is possible to apply for citizenship after just 3 yrs of residence. Belgium residence permit requires no minimum stay during the year and offers visa free access to border-less schengen countries in Europe.

    Bulgaria

    Bulgaria is a EU member country and currently offers a “investor program” for non-EU citizens where upon investing 1 million BGN (approx EUR 530,000), it is possible to get residence permit for 5 yrs. The investment can be placed in a govt guaranteed secure bonds or can be invested in bulgarian business venture.

    Bulgaria has low tax rates on corporate and personal income. Bulgaria is likely to join the schengen in the near future.

    Latvia:

    Latvia offers a new residence program for investors and the residence program allows visa free travel in other European and schengen countries. A temporary residence permit can be obtained against a investment of EUR 300,000 in bank term deposit for 5 years (or) invest approx EUR 70,000 buying a real estate (or) by forming a business in Latvia.

    Czech Republic:

    Czech Republic has the cheapest residence program in Europe. Foreign nationals coming from outside Europe can get long stay business visa by forming a SRO company in Czech Republic. SRO works just like LLC and single person can be the owner. The capital required is approx EUR 8000 and atleast 50% of the capital must be paid up. As a owner of the company, you will qualify for long stay residence permit, along with your family and members. Permanent residence can only be obtained after 5 years of legal residence. Purchase of real estate property is possible through the SRO company. All company incorporation costs would come around EUR 5’000 and in addition you will need EUR 10’000 to EUR 15’000 annually to cover living costs and expenses.

    Monaco:

    Monaco is a very popular destination for wealthy millionaires. Getting residence in Monaco is possible against a minimum investment of EUR 1,000,000 (1 million) which has to be invested either with a Monaco bank or in Real estate or with a good mix of both. Monaco is not a EU member country and non-EU persons have to apply through France. There are no income, wealth, gift or capital gains taxes in Monaco and the prices of real estate are very expensive.

    Hong Kong:

    Hong Kong has low corporate taxes and its a major financial and business centre in Asia. Hong Kong has a “Investor Residence Program” and the minimum investment needed is HK$ 10 million or more (approx US$ 1.2 mill) and this money can be invested in Real Estate or Certificates of Deposit (CD), equities, securities or investment schemes endorsed by HK Immigration Dept.

    Singapore:

    Singapore excels in modern major financial and banking sector in south east Asia. Singapore offers a “Global Investment Program” which encourages overseas investors and business entrepreneurs to make a significant contribution to the economy of the country. The minimum investment needed is SG$ 5 million (approx US$ 4 million) which has to be deposited in a bank or financial institution authorized by Singapore Financial Authority.

    St.Kitts and Nevis:

    St.Kitts and Nevis offers directly “citizenship” to foreign clients and the minimum investment needed is USD 250,000 and there are no residency requirements. The major advantage of gaining St.Kitts Citizenship and passport is it allows visa free travel to schengen and other 180 countries including Europe. Investment in Real estate is also possible with higher amount. No personal visit is needed.

    Panama:

    Panama has a investor program to foreign nationals who invest in the country. The minimum investment is USD 80,000 which has to be invested in agriculture project or USD 300,000 in a real estate or a bank term deposit. A temporary or permanent residence can be obtained under investor, business or pensioner category.

    Bahamas:

    Bahamas is a major offshore “Tax haven” for company formations in the Carribean. Bahamas has “economic investment program” for which a permanent residence is granted foreign nationals who make minimum investment of USD 500’000, in buying purchase a residence (a home or condominim) in Bahamas. The permanent residence grants the investor right to live and work in Bahamas.

    Dominica:

    Dominica offers direct “citizenship” upon investing a non refundable investment of USD$ 75,000 in the economic development of the country. The formalities invoved with the Govt is very strict and the personal interview in Dominica is a must.

    USA 500,000 USD or One Million  must be invested.Please contact for further details. Investor gets EB5 visa (temporary residence), and after two years he can get permanent residence – Green Card USA. Dual citizenship is recognized. After 7 years of residence citizenship of the USA is possible. Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 172 countries
    United Kingdom 2,000,000 £ must be invested on the territory of the UK for 5 years. Investor and his family members get Temporary Resident Visa for 3 years, after 3 years it is extended for 2 years. After 5 years investor can get Permanent Residence. Dual citizenship is recognized. British passport can be obtained after 6 years of residence.Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 173 countries
    Ireland Investment from 500,000 to 1,000,000 EUR (depending on the nature of investment) is required. Investor and his family members get temporary residence permit for 2 years, then renewed for another 3 years. After 5 years of residence applicants are eligible for permanent residency and citizenship of Ireland. Dual citizenship is recognized.Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 160 countries
    Hong Kong 10,000,000 HK$ (approximately 1,290,000 USD) Investor and his family members get Temporary Residence. Permanent Residence is possible after 7 years.     Singapore (Global Investor Program) 2,500,000 SGD must be invested in Singapore for five years. To qualify for the program the turnover of the applicant’s company must be at least SGD 30,000,000 o per annum in the most recent year. Investor and his family members get Permanent Residence in Singapore. After two years of residence they can acquire citizenship and passport of Singapore. Dual citizenship is not recognized. Investor will be expected to renounce all his previous citizenship and passports. Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 167 countries
    Australia (Significant Investor Visa) 5,000,000 AUD  must be invested in Australia for a period of four years. Investor and his family members get Temporary Residence (visa subclass 188) and after 4 years – Permanent Residence (visa subclass 888). After 1 year with Permanent Residence investor can apply for Australian citizenship. Dual citizenship is recognized. Citizenship can be obtained after 5 years of residence in Australia.     New Zealand From 1,000,000 to 7,000,000 USD depending on the chosen program of investment. Investor and his family members get Temporary Residence for 3 or 4 years. Permanent Residence is possible after 3 or 4 years depending on the chosen program of investment. Dual citizenship is recognized. After 5 years in Permanent Residence status.Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for more than 160 countries
    Switzerland There is no program of residence by investment. Applications are considered by cantons individually (each canton has its own criteria). Temporary residence (Permit B) can be obtained on the basis of cantonal tax agreements (minimum CHF 150,000 annually). This permit does not allow to work or to be engaged in any gainful occupation in Switzerland. Citizenship application is possible after 12 years from the date of initial permit. Dual citizenship is recognized. After 10 years on Permit B you can get Permit C (Permanent Residence in Switzerland). After 2 years on Permit C you can get Swiss citizenship. Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 170 countries
    Cyprus (Direct Citizenship by Investment Program) Investment from 2,500,000 to 5,000,000 EUR (depending on the nature of investment) is required. Investor and his family members get full citizenship. Processing time for applications ranges from 3 to 4 months. Dual citizenship is recognized.Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for many countries
    Malta (Direct Citizenship by Investment Program) Investment of 500,000 EUR (350,000 into property acquisition and 150,000 into bonds) is required. Donation of 650,000 EUR to governmental foundation is another condition. Investor and his family members get full citizenship. Processing time for applications is about 18 months. Dual citizenship is recognized. Advantage: Visa - Free Travels for 163 countries
    Austria (Citizenship Program) Investment of 10,000,000 EUR into Austrian business or venture capital. Passive investments will not do. The investment must create new jobs for Austrian citizens and/or enlarge export of Austrian state or bring new technology. Generally this citizenship program is not recommended by us because it is risky and final result is not guaranteed. Such investment allows you to get citizenship of Austria (for special merits in economic sphere). Processing time for applications ranges from 9 to 18 months. Decisions on citizenship application are taken on case-by-case basis subject to approval of the relevant ministry and then council of ministers. Dual citizenship is generally not recognized.     Hungary Minimum investment of 300,000 EUR into government bonds for 5 year term applies. No interest is paid on the investment. After five years,the amount is returned to the investor.The professional fee of the approved financial intermediaries is 60,000 EUR. Investor and his family members get Temporary Residence, and after 6 months apply for Permanent Residence. Citizenship application is available after 8 years.     Latvia (EU) Investor can invest into real estate in the amount of 250,000 EUR. Additional 5 % from the deal must go to the State as a donation. In two or three months after the purchase investor and his family members can get Temporary Residence for 5 years; residence is renewed annually. After 5 years of physical residence Permanent Residence is available. Dual citizenship is not recognized.     The Portuguese Republic (EU) Investor can simply buy real estate valued EUR 500,000. Real estate can be used for personal or commercial purposes. Investor and his family members can get Temporary Residence. After 5 years of Permanent Residence is available. Citizenship is available after 6 years (5 years in temporary statues + 1 year with permanent status). Dual citizenship is recognized.

    Bulgaria (Permanent Residency and Citizenship Program) The option is investing 1,000,000 Lev (approximately 512,000 EUR) in government bonds for 5 years. The other possible option is 180,000 EUR (loan option of 512,000 EUR investments) in government bonds for 5 years. Nothing is returned to the investor after 5 years. In both cases investment is made without interest to the investor. Investor and his family members get Permanent Residence. After 5 years they can get Bulgarian citizenship (EU-citizenship). Physical residence can be waived (for the purpose of citizenship application). Also there is an option of fast tracking citizenship application by investing another 512,000 EUR (in this case of double investment citizenship will be granted after 1 year with PR). Second investment can be replaced by 100,000 EUR donations (under loan option). Dual citizenship is recognized.
    Saint-Kitts and Nevis (Direct Citizenship Program) Donation of 250,000 -300,000 USD (depending on a family composition) into SIDF. Investor and his family get citizenship of Saint-Kitts and Nevis (certificate of registration and second passport).     Commonwealth of Dominica (Direct Citizenship Program) Donation from 100,000 to 200,000 USD (depending on a family composition) to the Government of Dominica. Investor and his family get citizenship of Dominica (Passport of Dominica allows visa-free travel to the UK and to Ireland). Schengen Area will be visa free in 2015. Dual citizenship is recognized. Passports can be obtained in 6 or 7 months. At least one visit to the country (for an interview) is required.
    Grenada (Direct Citizenship Program) Investment of no less than 250,000 USD into real estate project approved by the government. Additional non-refundable expenses and government fees are 50,000 USD. Investor and his close family members get citizenship and passports of Grenada. Passport of Grenada allows visa-free travel to the UK and to Ireland. Schengen Area will be visa free in 2015. Dual citizenship is recognized.
    Republic of Panama(Residence and Second Passport Program) Deposit of 380,000 USD with the National Bank of Panama is required for 5 years.
